Week 1 of the Second Nine Weeks
Hold on to your boots parents. I've got good news and bad news. Which would you prefer first? OK as requested, the good news. One quarter of the school year is completed and some of your children have shown themselves to be great creative thinkers. They have calculated, written, analyzed, inferred , and hypothesized themselves into greater dimensions into their studies. We are so very proud of them for setting a standard for their classmates to follow. You should be proud of them and please let them know. Although they may say they don't want the praise...give it to them anyway! (they really love it!)
Ok, the bad news. We have some very late bloomers on our team and I'm not happy with the grades some of them are going to bring home to you on Wednesday (15 October 2008First Report Card Issued) Parents, as I have mentioned before homework is used to reinforce the concepts learned in your child's classes. If this does not take place, they could potentially loose all the understanding received say in Mr. Pratt's class. We really appreciate many of you that have supported Team 801 for the first nine weeks. The struggle is not over. We have to be that much more diligent in checking the classwork and homework of our children. A very wise teacher told me that its not what you expect; it's what you inspect! So lets continue to inspect our child's work and NO they did not complete it at school. Yes Ma'am, Sir, all students have homework every night whether it's reading from the textbook (Georgia Studies) to doing follow up assignments from the text. As a matter of fact below are my plans for the upcoming week of school October 13-17, 2008.

Where has the time gone?
My goodness! Has nine whole weeks passed already? I must say it just seemed to have crept up on me! Well, as you know parents we will be submitting grades for report cards on Friday October 10. Students will receive them the following Wednesday. As I have mentioned before, although we have some extremely intelligent students, some are on, dare I say, the lazy side. It appears that I am still having problems getting work from your children. Unfortunately they are going to miss out on one of the four pizza parties I give to the class with the highest grade point average. I will tabulate the final scores this Thursday night! Good luck students.
I have also allowed for an Amnesty week. This is when from Monday through Wednesday that I allow students to turn in any late/missing work from the first quarter. The highest score they can receive is a 70 percent (better than a zero). The only catch is that the work must be entirely correct because if there are any wrong answers I will start deducting point starting at 70%. Again 70 is better than a 0%.
We have jump from Chapter 3 to Chapter 14 pages 498-524(Since it covers our political process) I wanted to make learning reverent to our students. They are extremely excited about the upcomimg political presidential race and will be given a project to get as many registered voters from within their neighborhood. More details to follow. There is approximately 27 days before you are required to vote. Ask your child who actually will be voting who becomes president.
Besides making political posters in class, we will be having a notebook check on Thursday. I will send a progress report home with students on Monday,October 6, 2008 so that you will know what they are missing. Parents, I really need your help on this one. Call or email and I will do my best to get back with you as soon as I can. Don't forget parents. The phone number for conferences with Team 801 is 706-565-3026. Ask for Mrs. Whitehead. She will handle the rest. Well, that's all for now.

Week of Sept. 22-29
Hello parents and students. This week we will be going to the computer lab to continue working on our geographical region's brochures. We only have a couple of weeks to complete this project so lets get busy.
As we read the final pages of Chapter 3 (90-96) we have discovered how early Americans traveled into what is now known as North America. We have also uncovered the names and characteristics of the four periods of early Native Americans who lived in the North America. They are Paleo (earliest), Archaic (early, middle and late), Woodland (created the bow and arrow), and Mississippian (used tobacco during ceremonies). Chapter 3 test will be administered on Friday. There will be at least 10 fill-in-the-blank questions and approximately 15 multiple choice questions. We will review on Thursday.
We are continuing to discuss the candidates for the presidency. On Wed. we will view Sen. John McCain's Speech and work on a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the two. Are you a registered voter. If not please get out there and do your civic duty.
Finally, a note about homework. Although we are in the 7th week of school there have been quite a number of our students that have decided that homework is not something they have to do. All the while their grade is slowly coming down. I encourage you to ask your child to look at their completed homework and ask them to make corrections to it. Please parents, I need your help. Thanks for your support. I know that we can work together to get your child from the 8th to the 9th grade.
